Troubleshooting your USB hard drive in Windows
If your USB hard drive is no longer listed in My Computer, or you are unable to access the files stored on the drive.  Please try the following and test between each step:

Click here for information on how to recognize when your host USB port may not be supplying sufficient power.
  1. If you are running Windows 98SE, make sure you have downloaded and installed the drivers.  Drivers are not required for most USB drives in Windows ME/2000/XP/Vista.  Please check our drivers section for more information.
  2. Check all USB cables.  Connect the cable directly to back of the machine. If you are using a USB hub, eliminate it to see if your problem is resolved.
  3. Check the USB ports.  Test other USB devices on the ports to verify they are working.  If you have multiple USB ports, try each port.
  4. If your drive requires an AC adapter, please check all cables, and make sure the drive is switched ON in the back if a switch is included in your model.  Test different AC power plugs, and bypass any power strips. You may also try a USB Y-cable to draw power from TWO USB ports at once.
  5. Test the drive on another machine.
If you are still unable to access the drive, the partition on the drive may be damaged or corrupted and you may need to repair or reformat the drive.
  • You can try third party disk utilities such as Norton Disk Doctor or Data Rescue X to recover or repair the drive.
  • If you are not concerned with the data, you may be able to reformat the drive.  Click here for information on formatting your hard drive for Windows.
  • If you need data recovery, you may need to contact a Data Recovery company to retrieve your data.  Click here for more information.
