Hard Drives

Back

I have a corrupted file on my Verbatim hard drive.
To attempt to fix this file corruption you will have to connect the hard drive to a Windows machine and run chkdsk.
  1. Connect the hard drive to the PC, and verify that it is assigned a drive letter in My Computer.
  2. Click on Start, Run, type Command, then click OK.
  3. Now from an MS-DOS Window, type  chkdskX: /F (X: representing the drive letter of the hard drive in My Computer) and press ENTER.
  4. You may receive a prompt asking if you would like to save the file to the disk.  You can choose Yes if you need to try and recover the file, or No if you do not need the file.
  5. Once chkdsk completes, type Exit  and press ENTER.  This will close the window.
  • Chkdsk saves each repaired file in the root folder as a File<nnnn>.chk file, and each repaired folder in the root folder as a Found.<nnn> folder, where <n> is a number.
  • For information about how to use Chkdsk, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "chkdsk" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "Chkdsk Command" topic.
If you need to recover files that are corrupted, you can try downloading third-party file recovery software.  Verbatim does not recommend a specific software package and we cannot guarantee successful results.  You can find shareware and demo software by clicking here.

To prevent file corruption in the future:
  • When connected to the PC or Mac, always follow proper disconnect procedures.
